Complete Equipment List for a Bedridden Patient at Home
Everything a bedridden patient needs — hospital bed, air mattress, hoist, suction, oxygen, commode. Full checklist with rental pricing across Lahore, Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
A bedridden patient at home needs more than a bed. Whether the patient is bedridden from stroke, advanced dementia, late-stage cancer, severe neurological disease, or long-term unconscious state, the right equipment is the difference between weeks of complications and years of stable comfortable care. Pressure sores, chest infections, falls during transfers, UTIs from poor hygiene — all are directly linked to equipment quality. This page lists exactly what equipment a bedridden patient should have at home, what is essential and what adds on for specific needs, and how pricing works for rental in Lahore, Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
Why Equipment Matters More for Bedridden Patients
Three specific risks dominate bedridden patient care — and all three are directly reduced by the right equipment:
- Pressure sores (bedsores) — immobile patients develop skin breakdown within days without proper surface support. Air mattresses prevent this at a tiny fraction of the cost of treating a stage-4 bedsore.
- Chest infections — flat positioning pools secretions in the lungs. Head-elevation beds let patients breathe better. Suction machines clear what cannot be coughed out.
- Caregiver injury — lifting a bedridden adult without proper equipment ruins the family carer's back within weeks. Hoists, electric beds and the right transfer aids protect both the patient and the family.
Families who equip the home properly from the start spend less overall than families who improvise with household beds and old rugs. The equipment cost is real but the alternative — hospital readmission for infection, bedsore treatment that takes months, injured family carers — is much more expensive.
Essential Equipment Every Bedridden Patient Needs
Hospital Bed
Not optional for a long-term bedridden patient. An electric or semi-electric hospital bed allows head elevation (critical for feeding and breathing), knee elevation (comfort and pressure distribution), side rails (fall prevention), correct height for family and nurse to work without back strain. For patients with limited mobility, a bed with easy exit on one side helps with transfers.
Our hospital bed on rent options range from manual two-crank beds through semi-electric to fully electric ICU beds.
Rs. 8,000 – 25,000 / monthAlternating Pressure Air Mattress
Essential for every bedridden patient. The mattress has air cells that inflate and deflate continuously, shifting pressure points so the skin does not break down. For patients with existing bedsores, a wound-care mattress with lower pressures is used.
Our air mattress on rent options include basic bubble, alternating pressure, and specialised wound-care variants.
Rs. 3,000 – 7,000 / monthCommode Chair
Bathroom trips are impossible for a bedridden patient. A bedside commode chair is used for toileting with help, keeping dignity and preventing bed-soiling that worsens skin breakdown. For patients who cannot be transferred, a bedpan is used instead for bowel movements and a urinal for urine.
Rs. 2,500 – 4,000 / monthOverbed Table
Small, often overlooked, hugely useful. Lets the patient eat at a reasonable height, keeps care supplies within reach of the nurse, and makes daily routines manageable. Height-adjustable models are best.
Rs. 2,000 – 3,500 / monthPulse Oximeter
Small fingertip device that measures oxygen saturation. For bedridden patients at risk of chest infection (which is most of them), daily SpO₂ checks catch problems early. One of the cheapest useful devices in the home.
Rs. 500 – 2,000 (purchase)Digital Blood Pressure Monitor
For patients with cardiac, diabetic or neurological conditions. Routine home BP monitoring prevents the swings that happen in bedridden patients and alerts the family to problems.
Rs. 2,500 – 4,000 (purchase)Add-On Equipment for Specific Needs
Patient Lift (Hoist)
For heavier bedridden patients, patients who cannot support any weight, or elderly families where the main caregiver cannot safely lift. A hoist with a sling moves the patient between bed, chair and commode without strain on the family. The caregiver injury rate drops dramatically where hoists are used.
Rs. 15,000 – 25,000 / monthSuction Machine
Essential for bedridden patients who cannot clear their own secretions — stroke patients, advanced dementia, tracheostomy, long-term coma. Clearing the airway prevents aspiration pneumonia, which is the leading cause of death in bedridden patients.
Our suction machine on rent options include portable units for occasional use and ICU-grade machines for continuous care.
Rs. 4,000 – 10,000 / monthOxygen Concentrator
For bedridden patients prescribed home oxygen — advanced lung disease, severe heart failure, post-stroke hypoxia, palliative patients needing comfort oxygen. A concentrator produces oxygen continuously from room air, with a backup cylinder for load-shedding.
See our oxygen concentrator on rent packages, usually paired with backup cylinder.
Rs. 15,000 – 32,000 / monthFeeding Pump
For bedridden patients unable to swallow safely who have a Ryle's tube or PEG tube. The feeding pump controls the rate of feed, preventing aspiration and allowing continuous overnight feeding that is more comfortable than large bolus feeds.
Rs. 6,000 – 10,000 / monthNebulizer
For bedridden patients prone to chest problems. Also useful during chest infections for airway management. A home nebulizer with prescribed medicines often prevents hospital admission for respiratory worsening.
Rs. 2,500 – 4,000 / monthVital Signs Monitor
For complex bedridden patients where continuous monitoring is useful — home ICU setups, patients on ventilators or BiPAP, patients with recent cardiac events. Shows heart rate, BP, SpO₂, respiratory rate on one screen.
Rs. 15,000 – 25,000 / monthIV Stand and Infusion Pump
For bedridden patients on home IV fluids, continuous medication or feeding. The IV stand supports bags; the infusion pump controls the delivery rate accurately.
Rs. 1,500 – 12,000 / month depending on itemsReclining Wheelchair
Even bedridden patients benefit from some time out of bed. A reclining wheelchair with support cushions allows the patient to be moved to the living room, outside for sunshine, or to a doctor visit. Chair positioning prevents the "always flat" problem.
See our wheelchair on rent options.

Why Bundled Packages Are Better
Most families setting up long-term care for a bedridden patient at home benefit from a bundled equipment package rather than piecing items together separately. Benefits:
- Lower overall monthly cost than renting items individually
- One delivery, one installation, one point of contact
- Equipment pre-matched — the suction machine's power plug reaches the hospital bed, the hoist fits under the bed base, consumables all come from the same supplier
- One monthly invoice
- Easier to upgrade or downgrade as the patient's condition changes
For families managing bedridden patients as part of broader care in the home, the equipment-plus-nursing arrangement coordinated through one group is simpler than running two separate suppliers.
Equipment + Nursing — The Right Combination
Equipment on its own is only half of what a bedridden patient needs. Daily nursing care is the other half. Common patterns we see:
- Mild bedridden — equipment plus family care, visit-based nurse 2-3 times a week
- Moderate bedridden — equipment plus 12-hour day nurse or attendant, family covers nights
- Severe bedridden — equipment plus 24-hour nursing (two nurses rotating)
- Home ICU bedridden — full equipment plus 24-hour ICU-trained nursing, visiting doctor review
Through our Shine Care group, equipment and home nursing services are coordinated on one call. The nurse arrives knowing exactly what equipment is set up and how it is positioned. One invoice. One escalation path if something goes wrong.
Load-shedding and bedridden patients
For bedridden patients on oxygen, suction, feeding pumps or vital signs monitors, power cuts are a daily reality in Lahore, Islamabad and Rawalpindi. UPS and generator backup is essential. For critical equipment, the backup oxygen cylinder covers the oxygen; a battery-backup suction machine covers airway care. Plan for power cuts before they happen, not when they do.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does every bedridden patient really need an air mattress?
Yes. Bedsores can start within hours in an immobile patient on a regular mattress. An alternating pressure air mattress is one of the cheapest and most important rentals — it prevents complications that take weeks or months to treat.
Can we use the household bed with just an air mattress on top?
Possible for very short-term care, not recommended for long-term bedridden patients. Household beds are the wrong height for carers, do not elevate the head for feeding, and have no side rails. The hospital bed is almost always worth it.
How quickly can equipment reach my home for a hospital discharge?
Most Lahore, Islamabad and Rawalpindi urban areas within 2 to 4 hours of confirmed booking. For urgent same-day setups we can usually have the bed and air mattress in the room before the ambulance arrives.
What if the patient recovers and no longer needs some equipment?
Call us. We pick up specific items same day or next day, and adjust the monthly rent from that point. No penalty for scaling down as the patient improves.
Do you deliver and set up in all three cities?
Yes. Lahore, Islamabad and Rawalpindi served by the same team structure, same equipment range, same transparent pricing.
Can we book nursing care along with the equipment?
Yes. One call to 0344-9226778 can book both — our group's home nursing team is briefed on your equipment setup and arrives ready to use it from the first shift.
Equipment lists in this guide are typical patterns, not individual medical advice. The actual equipment your patient needs is determined by the treating team. Oxygen, ventilators, feeding pumps and BiPAP use must be prescribed. External reference: WHO — Assistive technology.
